Things you should be reading instead: Mafalda
Meet Mafalda Nunes, a passionate curator and creative and the beautiful brain behind Sequin Fight!
When I started Nobody is reading this almost one year (!!!!!!!) ago, I wanted to make space for other perspectives and experiences that are not my own. Although this is and will always be a deeply personal project with intimate rambles and essays, I always knew I wanted to host (why is this word so good) people who inspire, who I look up to, and who have so many amazing things to say and share.
Without further ado, welcome to Things you should be reading instead, a column where you’ll get to meet some of my favorite people in the world.
This month, I’m so happy to have the beautiful Mafalda with us. Her passion, energy and values are truly contagious, and every time I see her name in my DM’s, I know I’ll leave our conversation with a cheesy smile on my face. You’ll understand why!
She’s a passionate curator and creative since she can remember, DJ, and brand strategist, known for her eclectic taste and ability to inspire in music, fashion, home decor, and lifestyle. As the creative director and founder of the amazing Sequin Fight, a brand born from her belief that we all need connection and a sense of belonging, she creates exclusive merch, collabs, events, and experiences that promote self-care, empathy, and individuality. Through her 1:1 sessions, Mafalda also helps people live happier lives and embrace their true selves with more confidence, while fighting for a world with more empathy, love, and sequins.
A song you wish you could listen to for the first time
Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin; All is full of Love by my 4ever queen - Bjork; Within by Daft Punk; Strawberry Fields Forever by Beatles or Thinkin bout you by Frank Ocean or Água Doce by one my favourite portuguese artists and friend Silly aka Maria Bentes.
The perfect tune to start a DJ set with
Shine by Cleo Sol was the one I started my DJ set with at NOS Alive, and I’ll remember it forever.
And the best one to wrap it up
Imagine by John Lennon, which was written in the 528Hz frequency, also known as the love frequency, and that means it has benefits for emotional healing and well-being.
The oldest thing in your closet
A beautiful red silk 1960s Chinese pajama that I wore one of the last christmases I spent with family, and apparently, it offended some catholics, lol. Clothes are definitely political.
And the newest
The most perfect vintage Gucci pink suede bag!
A book that changed your life
It’s not poetic at all, but it literally changed my life. - Aprenda a Dizer Não Sem se Sentir Culpado by Jacqui Marson.
And one you want to read
The greatest thing about books, like music, movies and the sea, is that they are endless!! sorry can’t pick just one:
Virgínia Mordida – Jeovanna Vieira; David Lynch memoir: Room to dream; When things fall apart by Pema Chödrön; O Amor e sua fome - Lorena Portela and can’t wait for Joan Didion’s diary.
The last movie you saw
Frances Ha
A hobby you want to try
Somatic work or I'd love to learn machine sewing, but I've never had the patience to do so.
A skill you’ve mastered
Creative problem solving.
Something that everyone should advocate for
Freedom, justice, human rights, empathy, love and sequins!
A love language
All of them!! Send me music and write me love notes, kiss me and hug me, cook for me, take me to dinner, and to watch sunsets on the beach.
An underrated personality trait
The ability to spread joy and make people happier, also being genuinely & authentically myself.
A compliment you wish you received more often
My favorite is “love your energy”.
The nicest thing someone can do for you
I really value when someone is genuinely there for me during both tough and the best times – support, hugs, love, and comfort are priceless.
Something you would write if nobody was reading
Soul scars
a cutie, a hottie!! mil sugestões adicionadas às minhas listas <3
